The bathroom is where most of us start and end our day. Your bathroom should bring you a feeling of relaxation and peace. It is your sanctuary from the outside world. After a long day of physical or mental exhaustion, a nice hot shower or a long soak in the bath is just what you need to wash away the stresses of the day.
Does your current bathroom give you that calm, relaxed feeling? Does it function well for your needs? Do you want a large soaking tub, or would a bigger shower be more ideal? Is it outdated and needs a refresh?
We can help you walk through the options from a basic facelift to a completely new layout.

First, you need to look at your budget and set realistic expectations based on your budget. And remember most houses have a combination of three types of bathrooms: owners’ site, hall/guest bath, and powder room. Each of these types of bathrooms have its own approach and budget. We have all seen the dream Bathrooms on HGTV and in the latest magazines, but is that dream bathroom realistic for your budget and your house?
The easiest answer to what a bathroom remodel costs is that it should be between 5% to 10% of the value of your house. Therefore, a $500,000 house should have a budget somewhere between $25k and $50k. But this one-size-fits-all approach does not work for a hall bathroom and especially not for a powder bathroom.
When you search online for the “average cost” of a bathroom it can be even more confusing. The internet will tell you that you can remodel a bathroom for as little as $6,627. And yes, you can “remodel” your Bathroom on the cheap, but this will be a DYI project where the money is going to be all materials, or a refresh using the existing cabinets, countertops, and floors. If you want a professional bathroom remodel with all the bells and whistles you need to think of it as a major investment. Remember you will not have a spa-like bathroom on a small budget.
So, what does a full Bathroom remodel really cost from a reputable general contractor in the Raleigh, Durham area? According to the Cost vs Value 2023 report the average of a major, midrange bathroom remodel averages $25,762, while a major upscale master bathroom remodel averages $79,400. There are a lot of factors that go into a full bathroom remodel that need to be taken into consideration, such as layout, vanities, faucets, light fixtures walls, finishes, and much more. This is why we offer our design phase to help you work through the details of your remodel to see what the real cost of your bathroom remodel will be.
Your budget should be based on not just one factor, but a wide range of things. This is just a short list of things to consider.
1. What bathroom are you wanting to remodel?
2. What is the value of your house and how is it priced in the neighborhood?
3. Are you fixing it up to resale or will you be in the house for 10 or more years?
4. How big is your bathroom? The bigger the bathroom the bigger the budget needs to be.
5. Are you looking to change the layout and/or remove a wall to make it more open?
6. What problems are you trying to solve, if any?
7. What materials do you want to use?
8. Are there any extras that you want to have?
According to the National Kitchen And Bath Association 2023 Design Trends study last year the mean (middle price) for an Owner’s bathroom remodel was $38,000, while the two largest groups were between $ 20K - $30K and $50K - $70K. These costs echo what the Cost vs Value 2023 study shows above.
So, why is there such a large gap between the bathroom remodel of $20,000 vs $70,000? Much of this has to style of bathroom you are looking for in the end. If you are looking to replace what you have or you want to change the layout, make the bathroom more open, convert the bathtub to a large walk-in shower, or create a spa-like retreat. A budget can be as big as your dream bathroom.
Also, according to the same NKBA/KBIS study the average for a hall or guest bathroom remodel was $24,000 and a powder room was around $17,000. And this makes sense seeing how the hall bathroom and powder rooms are smaller bathrooms.
Just like in any project the cost of a bathroom remodel is spread out over a variety of items, but this is your typical breakdown. Each bathroom remodel is different, and the percentages may vary depending on your budget and the wants and needs of your project.
Once you have decided on how much you want to spend remember that there are always surprises so keep about 10% as a contingency plan. The goal is not to use this money but to have it as a backup when something unexpected happens or when you realize that the light fixture or sink is more than you were expecting. This is especially true for older homes.
